How to get better at pickleball – and what should one really focus on during training? SwePickleball interviewed Alexandre Antoni, pickleball player and coach in Stockholm, about his journey into the sport, his training philosophy, technique, tactics, and best tips for other players.
Alexandre has a long background in tennis but discovered pickleball in 2021. Since then, he has both developed his own game and started coaching others – from beginners to more experienced players.
From tennis to pickleball
How did you start playing pickleball, and how long have you been playing?
I'm originally from Paris, France, and moved to Stockholm in 2004. Tennis has always been a big part of my life – I started playing at five years old, thanks to my parents who are both tennis players. I competed in regional tennis tournaments in France and continued playing after moving to Sweden, mainly in summer tournaments in Skåne.
In 2021, I was introduced to pickleball by Isabelle Eriksson, one of Sweden's best players. My first experience with the sport was at Sundbybergs Rackethall with a small group of enthusiasts. I was hooked immediately! Since then, I've been playing regularly and started coaching others to spread my passion.

Why Alexandre fell in love with pickleball
What makes pickleball so enjoyable for you?
Pickleball is a perfect combination of competition and social interaction. It's an inclusive sport where people of all levels and ages can participate and have fun. I particularly appreciate the strategic and tactical elements, which are similar to tennis but in a less physically demanding format.
The community is also fantastic. It's wonderful to see people from different backgrounds come together and enjoy the game. Pickleball offers a delightful mix of challenges and joy.

Developing as a pickleball coach
What is your greatest achievement in pickleball?
I am very proud to have developed as a coach and helped new players find joy in pickleball. I have coached players of all ages – my oldest student is 80 years old! Seeing my students improve their skills and gain confidence on the court is incredibly rewarding.
Another milestone is my sponsorship with JOOLA, where I signed a Player Sponsorship Agreement. Through this collaboration, I have the opportunity to help build pickleball in Europe. My role includes social media, participation in tournaments, clinics, and marketing initiatives. It's an honor to represent a brand that shares my passion for the sport.

Alexandre's philosophy as a pickleball coach
Can you explain your philosophy as a coach?
I believe in creating a fun and supportive environment where my students can learn, improve, and enjoy the process. I place great emphasis on fundamentals – such as footwork, positioning, and communication – and use drills that mirror match situations to prepare players for real scenarios.
I also adapt the training to each player's individual needs, whether they are beginners or more experienced. For me, pickleball is as much a mental challenge as it is a technical one.
You can delve deeper into the fundamentals in our guide on pickleball technique.
Where does Alexandre play pickleball?
Which court do you usually play on? And do you have a favorite court?
I train regularly at Enskede Rackethall as a coach for Korpen Stockholm. During the summer, I enjoy playing at Pickla Bromma, a fantastic new place for outdoor pickleball, and sometimes at Ekerö Tennisklubb.
On Sundays, I also play with Täby Pickleball Klubb, where I am a member. It's a fantastic group, and I enjoy the camaraderie and fun atmosphere there. Each of these courts offers something unique, but the outdoor courts at Pickla are particularly pleasant when the weather is good – it's such a lively atmosphere, and the community there is very welcoming.
