What is pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport played with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. The game incorporates elements from tennis, badminton, and table tennis, but has its own rules and playing style.

How do you play pickleball?
A rally begins with a diagonal serve. The serve must bounce on the receiver's side, and the return must then bounce on the serving team's side. After that, the ball can be played after a bounce or as a volley, with the exception of volleying in the kitchen.
→ How to play pickleball step by step
Is pickleball difficult to learn?
No, the basic game is relatively easy to understand. Most people can quickly start maintaining simple rallies once they have learned the serve, the double-bounce rule, and the kitchen rule.
Technique and tactics, however, can be developed over a long period.

Can children play pickleball?
Yes. Pickleball can be played by children, adults, and seniors. The smaller court and relatively light equipment make the sport accessible, although game setup and tempo should be adapted to age and skill level.
Can seniors play pickleball?
Yes. Pickleball is popular among seniors because doubles play on the smaller court can involve less running than, for example, tennis. How physically demanding the game becomes depends on the level and form of play.
Is pickleball played as singles or doubles?
Both. Pickleball can be played as:
- singles – one against one
- doubles – two against two
The same court size is used for both forms of play.
How big is a pickleball court?
A pickleball court is approximately 6.10 meters wide and 13.41 meters long. The same outer dimensions are used as for a badminton doubles court.
On each side of the net, there is also the 2.13-meter deep non-volley zone, commonly called the kitchen.
→ See dimensions, lines, and a complete guide to the pickleball court
What is the kitchen in pickleball?
The kitchen is the area closest to the net and is officially called the non-volley zone.
You are allowed to enter the kitchen and play a ball that has bounced there. What you are not allowed to do is hit a volley while standing in the kitchen or on the kitchen line.
→ Read more about the kitchen rule and other pickleball rules
Can you stand in the kitchen?
Yes. It is a common misconception that you can never stand in the kitchen. You are allowed to stand and move there, but you are not allowed to hit a volley from that area.
What is the double-bounce rule?
The double-bounce rule means that the first two shots after the serve must be taken after a bounce:
- The serve must bounce on the receiver's side.
- The return must bounce on the serving team's side.
After that, players may hit the ball on the volley or after a bounce.
How do you serve in pickleball?
The serve is hit from behind the baseline and diagonally to the opponent's service court. There is both a traditional volley serve and a drop serve.
The serve must clear the kitchen and must not land on the kitchen line.
Can the serve hit the net?
Yes. If the serve touches the net but still lands correctly in the diagonal service court, play continues.
How do you score in pickleball?
In traditional side-out scoring, only the serving team or the serving player can score points.
In doubles, three numbers are stated, for example 7–4–1:
- 7 = serving team's score
- 4 = opponents' score
- 1 = first server
→ Read our complete guide to scoring in pickleball
Why do doubles games start with 0–0–2?
The starting team only gets one serve during the first serving round. Therefore, the first server is counted as server number two, and the game begins with the score 0–0–2.
How many points do you play to?
A typical game is played to 11 points and should normally be won by a margin of at least two points.
Other formats occur in competitions, for example, games to 15 or 21 points.
What is rally scoring?
Rally scoring is a scoring system where every rally can result in a point, regardless of which team is serving.
It differs from traditional side-out scoring where only the serving team can score points.
What equipment do you need for pickleball?
To start playing, you mainly need:
