The history of pickleball begins in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island off Seattle in Washington state, USA. What started as a simple family game on an old badminton court eventually evolved into an international racket sport with its own rules, competitions, federations, and millions of players.

Why is the Sport Called Pickleball?
The name pickleball has long been surrounded by two different stories.
The most widespread story is that the Pritchard family had a dog named Pickles and that the dog used to chase after the ball. Therefore, the sport was supposedly named after the dog.
However, that story doesn't appear to be the original explanation.
According to USA Pickleball's review of the sport's history, the dog Pickles was only born around 1968 – several years after the game had been created and named.
Pickle Boat – The More Likely Explanation
Joel Pritchard's wife Joan stated that she called the game Pickle Ball because the mix of different sports reminded her of a so-called pickle boat in rowing.
In rowing, the term referred to a crew assembled from oarsmen who had been left over from other teams.
Since the new game similarly combined elements and equipment from several different sports, she felt the name was fitting.
Nevertheless, the story of the dog Pickles lived on and has become part of pickleball's popular culture.
Pickleball Begins to Grow in the USA
During the 1970s, the sport began to become more organized.
In 1972, Pickle-Ball Inc. was formed to protect and develop the new sport.
A few years later, American media began to notice pickleball, which helped more people discover the game.
The First Pickleball Competition
In the spring of 1976, the first known pickleball tournament was held at the South Center Athletic Club in Tukwila, Washington.
Many of the participants were actually tennis players with limited pickleball experience.
Nevertheless, the tournament became an important milestone as the sport began to evolve from a family and recreational game into an organized competitive sport.
Pickleball Spreads Across the USA
During the 1980s and 1990s, the sport continued to spread.
New courts were built, better paddles were developed, and pickleball began to appear in more and more sports facilities and residential areas.
By 1990, pickleball was played in all 50 US states, according to USA Pickleball.
The breakthrough of the internet in the late 1990s also made it easier for players to find rules, equipment, and other players.
From Leisure Sport to International Racket Sport
In the 2000s, development accelerated significantly.
More tournaments began to be organized, rackets developed technologically, and specialized pickleball facilities were built.
At the same time, the sport began to spread far beyond the USA.
What made pickleball attractive internationally was, among other things, the combination of:

How Did Pickleball Come to Sweden?
Pickleball began to establish itself in Sweden through players, clubs, and racket sport communities who discovered the sport internationally and brought it home.
During the 2010s, the sport began to gain a clearer Swedish organization with clubs, competitions, and an increasing number of playing venues.
It is difficult to pinpoint an exact date for when the very first pickleball match was played in Sweden, and therefore it is better to view the development as a gradual establishment rather than a single starting point.
Swedish Pickleball Association
As the sport grew, Swedish pickleball was organized through the Swedish Pickleball Association.
The association works, among other things, to:

First Swedish Pickleball Championship
A significant milestone came in April 2019 when the first Swedish Pickleball Championship was organized.
The championship was held at Rosvalla Arena in Nyköping with Korpen Nyköping as the organizer.
A total of 140 players participated, and 264 matches were played during the championship.
The first SM (Swedish Championship) was a clear sign that Swedish pickleball had developed into an organized competitive sport.
Sweden Gets Its First Official Pickleball National Team
In 2025, Swedish pickleball reached another historic milestone when the Swedish Pickleball Association presented Sweden's first official national team squad.
A total of 18 players were selected for the senior and veteran national teams in preparation for, among other things, the European Championships in Rome.
This marked a new step in the development from local club sport to Swedish national team activities and international competition.
Pickleball in Sweden Today
Today, pickleball clubs and playing opportunities exist in many parts of Sweden – from large cities to significantly smaller towns.
The sport is played, among other things, through:
- dedicated pickleball clubs
- tennis and racket clubs
- Korpen associations
- sports clubs
- municipal sports halls
- private racket halls
The Swedish Pickleball Association currently gathers member clubs from several parts of the country, and Swedish competitive activities include national rankings, tournaments, and the team competition SPL.

Why Did Pickleball Become So Popular?
There isn't a single explanation for the sport's development.
An important factor is that pickleball is relatively easy to start playing, while the sport offers much greater tactical depth than it might initially appear to have.
The smaller court and the social doubles play that is common in pickleball also mean that people of different experience and age can play together.
At the same time, the sport contains advanced technical and tactical elements such as dinks, third shot drops, kitchen play, and fast volley duels, which means that even experienced players can continuously continue to develop.
